Keeping business local is an easy and effective way to support the local economy and keep the community strong.
Decorah is joining the movement of many cities nationwide that are passionate about preserving not only their economy, but also local character, infrastructure, and the environment. When money is spent locally it is more likely to cycle through other local businesses, which strengthens the local market. This helps to create more jobs and generate funding for community projects.
“In tough economic times, increasing sales may seem optimistic for any business,” said Nikki Brevig, Executive Director for the DACC. “But it’s important to know that every one of us can make an impact just by looking at our spending choices and seeking more opportunities to pay it local. The strength of our economy lies in each of us and now is the right time to act.”

About the Program
How You Can Help
By keeping business local, consumers support independent business owners. Winneshiek County is home to over 2900 local businesses, which employ over 11,110 community members in goods and service industries. Spending money locally helps these businesses thrive and protects the unique identity of Decorah.
Shifting as little as 5% of consumer spending to local businesses is enough to make an impact. In 2008 Decorah businesses brought in over $159 million of taxable sales. Based on these numbers, if a 5% increase occurred in 2009 this number would jump to more than $167 million—bringing into the local economy over half a million dollars more than the previous year.
