Darrin Walter has long thought about opening a Men’s Clothing store in Decorah, Iowa. On December 15th, the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting at Walter’s new store, Double Windsor. It was the last ribbon cutting of the year and a perfect way to tie a bow on retail 2022 – a year with a lot of movement and growth in the downtown district. Transforming the space from its preserved law office into a clothing retail space was hard won. Darrin and Terri did the demolition themselves and then brought in experts to help them get across the finish line. Six months, nine layers of insulation, and nine full dumpsters later, the space was ready for customers. They are very appreciative to Two Guys a Fixin, Zahasky Construction, Flyline Painting, Dan Jens Electric, Malcom Enterprises, and Jevne Drywall who all worked hard to shape the new space.

Double Windsor is stocking winter coats now and has high quality brands for browsing including 7 Downie Street, 7 Diamonds, Bamboo Cay, SAXX, Tallia, Aran Crafts, and Florsheim. Sizes are available up to 3XT. Expect suits, shirts, sweaters, pants, base layers, belts, hats and more than 20 styles of men’s shoes and boots. They also offers tux rental.

This historic building has been a bakery, real estate office, and law office. Now it’s a men’s clothing store that’s certainly built to last. Darrin is a big believer in facilitating a quality “in-store experience” where customers have an opportunity to touch the fabric and try on the clothes, both things that online shopping can’t offer. His customer service is quickly evident on the floor, but even beyond that is his ability to buy what people want. He has years of market research from Decorah Cleaners – 17 years to be exact – and saw firsthand what fabrics worked and which ones didn’t. His expertise and his attitude are already paying off. “We had unbelievable success in the first four weeks,” Darrin shared, “Decorah needs a men’s clothing store and we’ve worked hard to craft a real experience here, a comfortable vibe. Customers can find new brands and feel confident when they buy. I want people to be able to shop and ‘kick the tires.’ They can find the perfect thing for them.”
